Home Tech Troubleshooting Why Screensavers Disappeared and Why They’re Coming Back

Why Screensavers Disappeared and Why They’re Coming Back

Why Screensavers Disappeared and Why They’re Coming Back

While computers are packed with fun and essential apps, depending on when you bought your first PC, you might have fond memories of doing nothing but watching screensavers play on the screen. However, you don’t really see screensavers anymore. That’s because they were a product of their time and technology, and we have outgrown the limitations screensavers sought to fix.

The first computer screens available to the public utilized cathode ray tubes (CRT) . These made screens large, heavy, and slightly radioactive. More importantly, if they bombarded the screen with a static image for extended periods, the picture would become burned into the glass—hence the term burn‑in. Screensavers were designed to prevent this by playing moving images when the computer was idle.

Modern screens, however, mostly use liquid‑crystal displays (LCD) , where liquid crystals twist depending on electricity. This technology not only provides richer colors and thinner panels but also is not susceptible to burn‑in. Hence, screensavers were no longer needed. They persisted as a nostalgic shadow of their former selves—think ‘90s flying toasters and 3D mazes—but today you’re lucky if a computer ships with anything more than simple CGI streamers.

Yet technology never stops evolving. OLED (organic light‑emitting diode) screens now offer superior contrast, HDR, and viewing angles. They are found in many high‑end monitors and TVs. However, OLEDs are again vulnerable to burn‑in because their organic materials degrade unevenly with static images. So, if you own an OLED display, screensavers are once again essential.

Quick Reference: Screen Types & Burn‑in Risk

Screen Type Technology Burn‑in Risk Screensaver Needed?
CRT Cathode ray tube High Yes (historical)
LCD Liquid crystal display None No (aesthetic only)
OLED Organic light‑emitting diode Moderate to high Yes

Modern Screensavers: More Than Eye Candy

Even on LCD computers, screensavers can still serve practical purposes:

  • Security – Set your screensaver to require a password upon exit. This adds a layer of protection when you leave your laptop in public spaces.

  • Idle‑time triggers – Many antivirus suites and backup tools can be set to run only when the computer is idle. A running screensaver is a clear “idle” signal, allowing resource‑heavy scans without interrupting your work.

  • Aesthetics & mood – They can still be a fun way to personalize your workspace.

Conclusion

Screensavers were born out of necessity to protect CRTs, faded with the rise of LCDs, and are now making a comeback because OLED displays reintroduce the burn‑in risk. Whether you use them for protection, security, or nostalgia, they still have a place on modern desktops—especially if you own an OLED screen.
