Goat Simulator 3: Pay-To-Look Event – I Spent 2,000 Scraps and Almost Walked Away Empty

Let me tell you about the dumbest 2,000 scraps I ever spent. Not because the reward is bad – the Shovel is fine. But because the event is so poorly explained that I managed to screw up every single step. I paid a goat named Payton Wall, stared through a viewer, saw a faint arrow, ran in the wrong direction, dug up the wrong dirt, and almost gave up entirely.
The Pay-To-Look event is one of the more obscure “puzzles” in Goat Simulator 3. It’s not hard once you know what to do. But the game gives you almost no feedback when you’re doing it right. Here’s exactly how to complete it without losing your mind or your scraps.
What Is the Pay-To-Look Event?
Scattered around the Baadlands are a few Pay-To-Look viewers – telescope-like devices that show you a distant location. You pay scraps, look through them, and they point you toward hidden loot. The one in Newtown is the most accessible, and it leads to a buried chest containing the Shovel gear.
Completing this event also counts toward overall progression if you’re tracking 100% completion. So even if you don’t care about the Shovel, you might need to do it for the achievement.
Step 1: Find the Viewer (I Climbed Three Wrong Roofs)
Go to the Baadlands map and head to Newtown – the small desert town you’ve probably visited for scrap farming. Look for the tallest building in the southeastern part of town. It’s a square, multi-story structure with a flat roof. On that roof is the Pay-To-Look viewer, a large binoculars device on a stand. There’s also a goat named Payton Wall standing next to it.
Mistake I made: I assumed “southeastern building” meant the one with the water tower. Nope. Or the one with the big billboard. Also nope. The correct building has stairs leading up from ground level. Once you find the stairs, climb to the roof. You can’t miss the viewer.
Step 2: Pay 2,000 Scraps (And Don’t Walk Away)
Talk to Payton Wall. He’ll offer you a “look” for 2,000 scraps. Yes, that’s a lot. If you’ve been following my other guides, you know the fastest way to farm scraps is the photocopier duplication in Newtown itself. Fifteen minutes of cloning and breaking crates will get you 2,000.
Mistake I made: I paid the scraps, then immediately jumped off the roof to go explore. When I came back, the viewer still worked – but I had to interact with it again. I’m not sure if paying unlocks it permanently or just for that session. Don’t risk it. Pay and look immediately.
Step 3: Look Through the Viewer (The Arrow Is Subtle)
Interact with the viewer. You’ll get a zoomed-in, slightly blurry view of the distance. Somewhere in that view, you’ll see a glowing or pulsing arrow. It’s not huge. It’s not flashing neon. It’s a faint, translucent pointer. I stared for a full minute thinking the game had glitched.
Move your view around slowly. The arrow is usually pointing northeast of Newtown, toward a lone tree on a hill. Once you see it, make a mental note of the direction. Then step away from the viewer.
Mistake I made: I thought the arrow was pointing to a location inside Newtown. I spent ten minutes running around town looking for a tree. Then I realized the viewer shows the outside landscape. Look past the town borders, toward the desert.
Step 4: Find the Tree and the Dirt Mound
Head northeast of Newtown – past the last buildings, into the open sandy area. You’re looking for a single tree standing alone on a slight rise. It’s not a group of trees. It’s one distinctive tree, almost like a landmark.
Once you find the tree, walk around its base in a circle. About 5-10 feet away from the trunk, you’ll see a small dirt mound – a raised patch of brown earth that looks slightly different from the surrounding sand. It’s about the size of a goat.
Mistake I made: I started headbutting the tree itself. The mound is not at the base. It’s off to the side. Circle slowly. The mound blends in, especially if you’re playing on a small screen. Look for a slightly darker patch.
Step 5: Headbutt the Mound Until the Chest Pops Out
Stand directly on top of the dirt mound. Start headbutting (R2 / RT / left mouse click). Spam it. The mound will kick up dust. Keep going. After 10-20 headbutts, a wooden loot chest will burst out of the ground.
Headbutt the chest to open it. Inside is the Shovel gear. The event completes instantly. You’ll see a notification if you have event pop-ups enabled.
Mistake I made (the one that almost broke me): I was headbutting from the side of the mound, not on top. The chest never appeared. I dug for five minutes straight, thinking my game was bugged. You have to be centered on the highest point of the mound. Then headbutt straight down. Angle matters in Goat Simulator physics – who knew?
Also, I tried using the Drill Kicks. They work fine, but regular headbutts also work. No need to switch gear.
Why This Event Is Frustrating (And Why It’s Worth It)
The Pay-To-Look event is frustrating because the viewer’s arrow is vague, the mound is easy to miss, and the headbutt angle is finicky. But the Shovel reward has a hidden perk: once you have it equipped, other dirt mounds around the Baadlands (and even on the main island) become interactive. I found a second hidden chest near Fruitopia that contained a rare cosmetic hat.
So completing this event opens up more exploration. It’s a key item for completionists.
Final Pro Tip
After you get the Shovel, go back to Payton Wall at the viewer. He has new dialogue. Nothing useful, but it’s a fun little nod. Also, if you’re playing co-op, each player has to do the event separately – the chest only spawns for the person who pays and digs. So take turns.
Now go find that tree. And for the love of Pilgor, stand on top of the mound.
