watchOS 27.2 App Switcher: How to Use the New Press-and-Hold Gesture

If you’ve been missing the Apple Watch App Switcher since watchOS 27, there’s good news. It’s back in the watchOS 27.2 beta, though you open it differently now.

What Changed

On watchOS 26 and earlier, you double-clicked the Digital Crown to see your recent apps. In watchOS 27, that double press is reserved for Apple’s Live Rewind AI feature, so it no longer opens the App Switcher. That left a lot of people without a quick way to hop between apps.

watchOS 27.2 beta 2 restores the App Switcher with a new gesture: press and hold the bottom of the screen while you’re inside an app. The Digital Crown shortcut hasn’t returned.

How to Open the App Switcher

  1. Make sure your Apple Watch is running watchOS 27.2 beta 2 or later.
  2. Open any app. The gesture doesn’t work from the watch face.
  3. Press and hold the bottom of the screen.
  4. Release when your recent apps appear.
  5. Turn the Digital Crown to scroll through them, then tap the one you want.

Swipe left on the app’s card and tap the X. This is useful when an app is acting up. For a frozen app, a force quit with the Side button and Digital Crown is the better fix.

What If It Doesn’t Work?

Check which version you’re running:

  1. Open Settings on your Apple Watch.
  2. Tap General, then About.
  3. Look at the watchOS version.

If you’re on the stable watchOS 27 release, you won’t have the gesture. Current reporting also doesn’t say whether it behaves the same on every compatible watch. If you’re on a different beta, Apple may have changed it.

Should You Install the Beta Just for This?

Probably not. Beta software can be buggy and can drain your battery faster, and you rely on your watch every day. Apple hasn’t listed the change in its release notes, and it could still change before the final release. The public release of watchOS 27.2 is expected in late October or early November. If you can wait, you’ll see the final behavior without any beta risk.

If you do test it, back up your paired iPhone first.

FAQ

Is the App Switcher in stable watchOS 27?
No. It showed up in watchOS 27.2 beta 2. Stable watchOS 27 doesn’t have the press-and-hold gesture.

Why doesn’t double-clicking the Digital Crown work?
watchOS 27 changed that gesture, and Apple hasn’t restored it in the beta.

Will the gesture be in the final release?
It may be, but Apple hasn’t confirmed it. Beta features can change or disappear, so check again once 27.2 ships.

Do I need to close apps regularly?
No. Only remove or force quit an app that’s misbehaving.
