How to Force Quit an Apple Watch App in watchOS 27

An app freezes on your Apple Watch and nothing you tap does anything. You don’t need to restart the whole watch. You can close just that one app with two buttons.

Force quit a frozen app

  1. Stay in the app that’s frozen.
  2. Let go of the Side button.
  3. Open the app again and see if it works.

You’ll know it worked when the app fades away and you land on the watch face.

Why you can’t swipe the app away anymore

If you’re used to double-clicking the Digital Crown and swiping an app off the App Switcher, that no longer works the same way. In watchOS 27, the double-click is reserved for Apple’s Live Rewind feature. The Side button and Crown method above is the one to use for frozen apps. Swiping an app out of the Dock only removes it from your recent list.

If force quitting doesn’t help

Restart the watch. Hold the Side button until the power screen appears, then drag the Power Off slider. Wait for the screen to go black, then hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.

Force restart it. If the watch is completely unresponsive, hold the Side button and the Digital Crown together. Keep holding until the Apple logo appears. This should be your last resort, and you should never do it while a watchOS update is installing.

If the same app keeps freezing

A single freeze is usually nothing. Repeated freezes point to a bigger problem, so try these in order:

  • Update the app in the App Store.
  • Update watchOS to the latest version your watch supports.
  • Restart your paired iPhone, especially if the app relies on an iPhone app.
  • Check your watch storage. Low space can stop apps from launching.
  • Delete the app and reinstall it. Make sure its data is synced or backed up first.

FAQ

Will force quitting delete my app or its data?
No. It only closes the running app. You might lose something you hadn’t saved, but the app and its stored data stay put.

Should I force quit apps regularly to save battery?
There’s no need. Force quitting is for an app that’s stuck, not for routine cleanup.

Is there a way to close every app at once?
No. The Apple Watch has no close-all option.

What’s the difference between a restart and a force restart?
A restart shuts the watch down properly with the slider. A force restart cuts the power to the system, so use it only when the watch won’t respond at all.
