PlayStation Class Action Settlement: How to Claim Your Share of the $7.85 Million Fund

A $7.85 million class-action lawsuit filed against Sony and its PlayStation division has received preliminary approval from a federal judge and will proceed to a final approval hearing in October. The lawsuit alleges that Sony illegally stifled competition and raised prices after it stopped third-party sales of digital game vouchers in 2019. By making the PlayStation Store the exclusive source for purchasing certain digital games and subsequently raising their prices, the lawsuit claims Sony violated federal antitrust laws. If the final approval hearing is successful, approximately 4 million U.S. PlayStation customers who bought qualifying games through the PlayStation Store before April 2019 will be eligible for compensation.
If your PlayStation Network (PSN) account is still active, you don’t need to do anything; eligible users will automatically receive credits directly redeemable in their PlayStation wallet. However, if you have deactivated your PSN account, you must visit the official PSN Digital Games Settlement website and contact the administrators to request a paper check. The deadline to do this is August 27, 2026. If you wish to opt out of the settlement to potentially pursue your own separate lawsuit, you must submit a manual exclusion request by July 2, 2026.
The final individual payout amount has not yet been specified. Approximately 25% of the $7.85 million settlement fund will be allocated to attorneys’ fees, with the remainder distributed among the class members. A separate £2 billion suit against PlayStation is also ongoing in the U.K..
Which Games Qualify for the Settlement?
To be eligible, you must be a U.S. resident and have purchased at least one qualifying digital game through the PlayStation Store between April 1, 2019, and December 31, 2023. Qualifying titles are those that had a digital voucher available for purchase through third-party retailers like Amazon or GameStop before Sony removed that option. Several major titles are included in the settlement, such as “The Last of Us,” “Resident Evil 4,” “FIFA,” “Destiny 2,” and “God of War Collection.” The official settlement website provides a full list of all eligible games.
This is not the first class-action settlement involving PlayStation. In 2018, Sony reached a $65 settlement with PS3 owners over a removed operating system feature. Given that the current settlement fund will be distributed among millions of players, the individual payouts are likely to be modest, similar to recent class-action settlements involving Google and Apple.
