Leak Reveals Upcoming ChatGPT Group Chat Feature: Here’s a First Look
ChatGPT may soon feel more like a modern messaging app. A recent leak has uncovered an unreleased “Group Chat” feature, offering a first glimpse at how users might soon collaborate with an AI in a shared digital space.
Discovered by AI enthusiast Tibor Blaho, screenshots show a new “Start a group chat” button within the ChatGPT interface. The feature would allow a user to create a named group chat, generate an invite link for others to join, and set specific ground rules for the AI’s participation.
How the Group Chat Feature is Expected to Work
The leaked details suggest a flexible and controlled group experience:
-
Custom Instructions: The group creator can define custom instructions that apply only to that specific chat, separate from any user’s personal settings.
-
Two AI Modes: To manage the conversation flow, the AI can be set to either respond automatically to the group’s discussion or only when it is directly mentioned by a user. This “mention” mode would prevent the AI from cluttering the chat with unsolicited responses.
-
Rich Features: The group chats are also shown to support familiar messaging tools like reactions, replies to specific messages, file uploads, image generation, and web search.
This development aligns with recent comments from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who criticized apps like Slack for creating “fake work.” He hinted at a future where AI agents could handle much of the coordination within team chats, escalating to humans only when necessary. While the leaked group chat feature appears to be a step in this direction, Altman has also stated that the advanced, agentic AI required for his full vision is still “very far” from realization.
It is not yet known if this new feature will be available to all users or reserved for paying subscribers.
