watchOS 26.4 Fixes Major Workout App Complaint
Apple redesigned the Workout app in watchOS 26, but not everyone loved the new exercise tracking experience. With watchOS 26.4, Apple has addressed a major complaint: starting a workout now requires only a single tap on the workout type icon.
The Problem Before watchOS 26.4
-
Users expected to tap the workout icon (e.g., “Run”) to start tracking.
-
In previous versions (watchOS 26.0 – 26.3), tapping the icon did nothing – it was just decoration.
-
You had to tap a separate “Play” icon to begin, which was confusing and slower.
What Changed in watchOS 26.4
-
Release note: “Workout type icon in the Workout app lets you start a workout with a single tap.”
-
Now the workout icon and the Play button do the same thing: start tracking your workout.
Remaining Issue
-
If you tap the icon while the list view is still loading, the tap may still be ignored. Apple could improve that further.
Why the Redesign Was Frustrating
-
The centered workout icon did nothing, leading users to scroll up or search for the Play button.
-
The design seemed optimized to avoid accidental starts, but it broke muscle memory from over a decade of Apple Watch use.
Availability
watchOS 26.4 is now available for all supported Apple Watch models.
