Turn Your Old TV Into a Smart Mirror: A DIY Guide

Turn Your Old TV Into a Smart Mirror: A DIY Guide

Don’t let your old TV gather dust in a closet! With a little DIY spirit, you can transform it into a futuristic smart mirror that displays the weather, your calendar, news headlines, and more, all while functioning as a regular mirror.

This project uses a Raspberry Pi and the free, open-source MagicMirror software to bring a customizable information dashboard to life behind a two-way mirror. Here’s how to build your own.

What You’ll Need: The Hardware

Gathering the right materials is the first step. You likely have the most expensive part—the display—already.

  • An Old TV: The foundation of your project. Ensure the screen works and has an HDMI port.

  • A Raspberry Pi: A starter kit is best (like CanaKit or Vilros). It should include the Pi board, a power supply, a microSD card (with an OS pre-loaded is a bonus), a case, and an HDMI cable.

  • A Two-Way Mirror (AKA One-Way Mirror): This is the magic ingredient. It’s reflective on one side but transparent from the other, allowing the TV’s display to shine through. Crucially, it must be the same size as your TV’s screen.

  • A Frame/Chassis: You can build a simple wooden frame from plywood to house everything securely.

  • Basic Tools: Wood glue, screws, a saw, and acrylic paint.

The Software That Makes It Smart

You’ll need to install three key pieces of software on the Raspberry Pi:

  1. Raspberry Pi OS: The operating system that runs the Pi.

  2. MagicMirror²: The core software that creates the smart mirror interface.

  3. MagicMirror Modules: These are the add-ons that display specific information like clocks, weather, and calendars.

Step-by-Step: Building Your Smart Mirror

Step 1: Set Up the Raspberry Pi

  1. Install the Raspberry Pi OS onto the microSD card and boot up the Pi.

  2. Connect it to the internet.

Step 2: Install and Configure MagicMirror

This is done through the Terminal app on the Pi.

  1. Open the Terminal.

  2. Carefully copy and paste the installation commands from the official MagicMirror GitHub page. Run them one at a time.

  3. Once installed, type npm run start to launch MagicMirror. You’ll see the default modules appear on your screen (a clock, calendar, etc.).

Step 3: Customize Your Display

This is the fun part! MagicMirror has a huge library of community-made modules.

  • Add Modules: Browse the MagicMirror Module List online. You can add modules for to-do lists, stock tickers, Spotify players, or even a live feed from the International Space Station!

  • Arrange the Layout: You can easily drag and drop modules or edit a configuration file to change their position, size, and appearance to create your perfect layout.

Step 4: Assemble the Physical Unit

  1. Build your wooden frame with a deep enough profile to fit the TV and the mirror.

  2. Securely mount the TV inside the frame.

  3. Carefully place the two-way mirror over the TV screen, with the reflective side facing out.

  4. Place the Raspberry Pi nearby and connect it to the TV’s HDMI port.

  5. Route all the cables neatly and seal up the frame.

Pro Tip: Ensure the room where you place the mirror is darker than the TV screen for the best “mirror” effect. The brighter the TV, the clearer the information will be.

Summary: Your Upcycling Project in a Nutshell

Step Task Key Item
1 Gather Materials Old TV, Raspberry Pi, Two-Way Mirror, Frame
2 Install Software Raspberry Pi OS & MagicMirror²
3 Customize Interface Add and arrange modules via the config file
4 Assemble the Hardware Build the frame and fit all components together

Once assembled, plug it in, and you’ll have a stunning, functional piece of tech that gives your old TV a brilliant new purpose. It’s a rewarding project that blends woodworking, coding, and design into a unique smart home centerpiece.
