Microsoft Finally Fixes the Infamous ‘Update and Shut Down’ Bug in Windows 11

A frustrating Windows bug that has annoyed users for years has finally been squashed. Microsoft’s latest KB5067036 update for Windows 11 (versions 25H2 and 24H2) resolves the long-standing issue where selecting “Update and shut down” would result in the computer restarting instead of powering off.

This glitch, which dates back to the Windows 10 era, was more than a minor inconvenience. For laptop users, it posed a real risk of draining the battery, as the device could remain powered on for hours after completing its updates.

The fix is part of the optional KB5067036 update, which began rolling out on October 28, 2025. If your PC is set to receive the latest updates automatically, it has likely already been installed. If not, you can manually check for it by going to Settings > Windows Update and clicking “Check for updates.”

Beyond this headline fix, the update also addresses several other persistent problems, including:

  • A video playback issue that caused some games and videos to appear with a red tint.

  • A “Catastrophic Error” (0x8000FFFF) that occurred when extracting large archive files.

  • Instances of File Explorer and other apps becoming unresponsive.

For users who have grown accustomed to their PC ignoring a simple “shut down” command, this update delivers a long-awaited and practical solution.
