Home Tech Troubleshooting How to Identify and Adjust Your iPad Magic Keyboard Backlight

How to Identify and Adjust Your iPad Magic Keyboard Backlight

How to Identify and Adjust Your iPad Magic Keyboard Backlight

Apple currently offers three distinct Magic Keyboard models compatible with its iPad lineup. These include options for the iPad Pro (11-inch and 13-inch), the iPad Air (11-inch and 13-inch), and the standard 11-inch iPad. Backlit models are available exclusively for the iPad Air and iPad Pro; notably, the newer Magic Keyboard Folio for the iPad (10th generation) does not feature a backlight.

To determine whether your Magic Keyboard supports backlighting, first verify that you have the necessary hardware: an iPad Pro M4 or later, or an iPad Air M2 or later. Once you have a compatible tablet and accessory, simply attach the keyboard to the iPad—no pairing or Bluetooth connection is required.

Upon connection, the keyboard backlight activates automatically. If you do not see the option to adjust the backlight, it may be because the ambient lighting is too bright, as the keyboard’s brightness adjusts dynamically to its environment. Nevertheless, you can manually modify the brightness if you prefer lighter or darker keys.

Adjusting the Magic Keyboard Backlight and Additional Features
With the Magic Keyboard attached to your iPad Air or iPad Pro, you can manually control key brightness by navigating to Settings > General > Keyboard > Hardware Keyboard.

The Magic Keyboard offers several other useful features. When connected, you can use it to wake your iPad, adjust the viewing angle by tilting the device, and modify trackpad settings such as pointer speed, Tap to Click, and Two-Finger Secondary Click. To access these, go to Settings > General > Trackpad. For the Magic Keyboard designed for the iPad Pro M4, haptic feedback can be adjusted under Settings > General > Trackpad > System Haptics. Additionally, the USB-C port on the Magic Keyboard can be used to charge your iPad Air or iPad Pro—though not as quickly as the tablet’s main port, it remains a convenient charging alternative.
