How to Enroll and Install on iOS 27 and macOS 27

How to Enroll and Install on iOS 27 and macOS 27

Apple has officially enabled beta firmware updates for AirPods Max 2 users running iOS 27 beta 2 or macOS 27 Golden Gate beta 2. The feature arrives after Apple previously confirmed that support for AirPods Max 2 beta firmware would be added in the second developer beta release.

With the latest software updates, AirPods Max 2 owners can now enroll their headphones in Apple’s beta firmware program directly from their connected iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Once enabled, users can receive upcoming AirPods firmware updates before their public release.

How to Enable AirPods Max 2 Beta Firmware Updates

If you want to test upcoming AirPods features and improvements, follow these steps:

On iPhone or iPad Running iOS 27 Beta

  1. Connect your AirPods Max 2 to your iPhone or iPad.

  2. Open Settings and tap Bluetooth.

  3. Tap the (i) button next to your AirPods.

  4. Scroll down to AirPods Beta Updates.

  5. Turn on the toggle to enroll in the beta program.

On Mac Running macOS 27 Beta

  1. Connect your AirPods Max 2 to your Mac.

  2. Open System Settings and select Bluetooth.

  3. Click the (i) button next to your AirPods.

  4. Scroll down to find AirPods Beta Updates.

  5. Enable the toggle to start receiving beta firmware updates.

According to Apple, firmware updates will install automatically when the AirPods are charging and located near the paired iPhone, iPad, or Mac that has beta updates enabled.

AirPods Max 2 Is Not the Only Model Eligible for Beta Firmware

Apple also offers firmware betas for AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Pro 2 with the USB-C charging case, and AirPods Pro 2 with the Lightning charging case. The first beta firmware build for AirPods Max 2 carries version 9.0.304, build 9A5304b.

What’s New in AirPods Beta Firmware?

As Apple announced during the WWDC26 keynote, upcoming AirPods features include custom EQ and Apple GymKit syncing. iOS 27 also introduces a completely revamped AirPods settings menu that better organizes all the feature options Apple has added over the last few years. AirPods are also compatible with the new Siri AI.

Important Considerations

Users who install beta firmware gain early access to new features, fixes, and improvements before Apple releases them to all customers. Since beta software remains under development, users should expect occasional bugs and performance issues during testing.

Note: You cannot update AirPods Max 2 firmware beta in iOS 27 Beta 1 or macOS 27 Beta 1. Support was added in iOS 27 Beta 2 and macOS 27 Beta 2.

Summary

  • Availability: iOS 27 beta 2 and macOS 27 Golden Gate beta 2 or later.

  • How to enable: Bluetooth settings → (i) next to AirPods → AirPods Beta Updates toggle.

  • Installation: Automatic when AirPods are charging and near the paired device.

  • Supported models: AirPods Max 2, AirPods 4, AirPods 4 (ANC), AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Pro 2 (USB-C & Lightning).

  • New features: Custom EQ, GymKit syncing, revamped settings menu, Siri AI integration.

  • Caution: Beta firmware may contain bugs and performance issues.

Conclusion

Apple’s expansion of the AirPods beta firmware program to include AirPods Max 2 marks a significant step for users who want early access to new features and improvements. With the simple toggle in Bluetooth settings, owners can now enroll their headphones and receive future updates before the public release. However, as with any beta software, users should be prepared for occasional instability during the testing period.
