Goat Simulator 3: Hyena Fur – The One Hiding Under a Lion King Rock
After digging up chests, firing cannons, and farming thousands of scraps, I needed an easy win. The Hyena Fur sounded simple: go to Fruitopia, find a big rock, go underneath it, get the gear. How hard could that be?
Turns out, “go underneath” is doing a lot of heavy lifting. I circled that rock for ten minutes looking for a cave entrance that didn’t seem to exist. I headbutted the rock. I licked the rock. I tried to climb it. Finally, I found the gap – and it’s smaller than you think. Here’s exactly where to look.
What Is the Hyena Fur?
It’s a cosmetic fur pattern that makes your goat look like a spotted hyena. Brownish-gray with darker spots. No special abilities – just a new look. But if you’re collecting all the customization options (and in Goat Simulator, half the fun is dressing up your herd), you need it.
More importantly, finding the Hyena Fur unlocks a hidden achievement on some platforms. So it’s worth the hunt.
The Location (Fruitopia – The Psychedelic Fruit Zone)
Open your map and go to the Baadlands region. Head to Fruitopia – the colorful, weird fruit-themed area you visited for the Cryoray MK II (near the crashed UFO). Fruitopia is hard to miss: giant fruit statues, bright colors, and a general “Alice in Wonderland but make it goat” vibe.
Once you’re in Fruitopia, look for a large rock formation that looks suspiciously like the Pride Rock from The Lion King. It’s a big, flat-topped rock jutting out of the ground, located north of the Radio Tower (there’s a tall radio tower in Fruitopia – use it as a landmark). You’ll know you’re at the right rock when you see a slight overhang.
Mistake I made: There are multiple big rocks in Fruitopia. I spent ten minutes headbutting the wrong one – a rounded boulder near the UFO. The correct rock is flat-topped and has a distinct shadow underneath. Look for the one that overhangs, not just a big lump.
The Tricky Part: Getting Underneath
The Hyena Fur is under the rock, in a small cave-like space. But the entrance is not obvious. It’s a narrow gap between the rock and the ground, maybe a goat’s width wide. You don’t need to jump, climb, or headbutt. You just need to crawl or walk into the shadow.
Here’s exactly what to do:
-
Approach the rock from the front (the side facing away from the Radio Tower).
-
Look at ground level. There’s a dark slit – it looks like a shadow, but it’s actually a gap.
-
Walk your goat directly into that gap. You might need to crouch (if Goat Simulator has a crouch – honestly, just wiggle forward). Your goat will slide underneath.
-
Once you’re fully under the rock, the Hyena Fur will automatically unlock. You’ll see a notification. No chest. No pickup. Just “unlocked.”
Mistake I made (the most frustrating one): I thought I had to headbutt the rock to create a cave. I spent five minutes ramming it. Nothing. Then I tried jumping on top. Also nothing. The entrance is a ground-level slit. If you’re not looking at the base of the rock, you’ll miss it.
Visual Clues to Help You
-
The rock has a flat top – like a table.
-
Underneath, there’s a shadow that’s darker than the surrounding ground.
-
If you walk around the rock, you’ll see one side where the gap is wide enough for a goat.
-
The cave space underneath is small – maybe two goat-lengths deep. Once you’re in, the fur unlocks instantly.
Mistake I also made: I brought a friend in co-op, and we both tried to get under at the same time. We got stuck. The game physics glitched, and we had to restart. Do this solo, or take turns.
Why This Gear Is So Easy to Miss
The Hyena Fur is one of the few gear pieces that doesn’t require a quest, a purchase, or an event. No scraps. No cannon. No digging. Just exploration. But because it’s hidden in a shadow, many players run right past it. I did. Three times.
The game doesn’t give you any hint that something is under the rock. No glowing marker. No NPC dialogue. It’s pure discovery. That’s both cool and frustrating.
Pro Tip After You Get It
Once you have the Hyena Fur equipped, go to the Hooferdome arena. There’s a wolf-themed NPC near the entrance. If you walk up to them wearing the hyena fur, they have a unique line of dialogue. Something like “You’re not a wolf, you’re a spotted menace.” It’s a small Easter egg, but I love that the developers thought of it.
Also, the hyena pattern looks hilarious with the Mental Mask. You become a psychic spotted goat. My co-op partner called it “the worst furry convention ever.”
Final Verdict
The Hyena Fur is a quick, free cosmetic if you know where to look. Five minutes, tops. No farming. No frustration. Just find the Lion King rock, look for the ground-level gap, and crawl under.
But if you’re like me and you circled the wrong rock for ten minutes, just remember: flat top, dark shadow, crawl don’t headbutt.
