एक ही कोखी के बहिनिया Sisters from the Same Womb Lyrics (English translation)| Halsashti | Hal Shashti
[VERSE 1]
One sister wears joy
One sister bleeds sorrow
Sukhiya owns nothing and everything
Dukhiya holds everything and nothing
(Dholak rhythm rises like dawn heat)
[VERSE 2]
Sixth-day festival bells ring—
Sukhiya dances in turmeric sunlight
While Dukhiya stands shoreless,
Salty tears merging with the Ganges
[VERSE 3]
Before sunrise, Dukhiya sweeps
Sukhiya’s doorstep with her unbraided hair
While men chant:
“Lakshmi dwells where women toil…”
[BRIDGE]
Sukhiya laughs, sweet as jaggery:
“Sister, you arrived first in this life—
Why then do you feast last?”
[CLIMAX]
Dukhiya whispers to the river:
“Mother, pain nests in my ribs
Like a koel bird in a neem tree…”
The old midwife clicks her tongue:
“Hush child—Chhathi Maiya hears
Even silent suffering.”
[FINAL REFRAIN]
Six crows caw at dusk—
The village sings Sukhiya’s wedding songs
While Dukhiya’s children
Chew on sugarcane husks
