Home Misc Why You Should Never Let Your PreCheck Lapse

Why You Should Never Let Your PreCheck Lapse

Why You Should Never Let Your PreCheck Lapse

Your TSA PreCheck membership is valid for five years from the date it’s approved. Letting it expire means immediately losing those precious time-saving benefits, especially frustrating during peak travel seasons. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recommends starting the renewal process at least 60 days before the expiration date. You can actually renew up to six months early without losing any of your existing membership time.

How to Check Your TSA PreCheck Expiration Date

If you’re unsure when your membership expires, checking is simple:

  1. Use the official TSA PreCheck Known Traveler Number (KTN) Lookup tool on the TSA website.

  2. Enter your personal details, and the tool will display your KTN (handy if you’ve forgotten it) and, most importantly, your membership expiration date.

How to Renew Your TSA PreCheck Membership

When it’s time to renew, you have two main options, with online renewal being the most recommended.

Option 1: Renew Online (The Fastest & Cheapest Method)

Renewing online is the most convenient and cost-effective path.

  • Where to Go: You can renew digitally through one of the TSA’s official partners: Clear, Idemia, or Telos.

  • The Cost: The standard renewal fee is $70 for another five years.

  • Pro-Tip for Savings: Both Clear (saves $8) and Idemia (saves $10) offer discounts for online renewals. Telos charges the same fee online and in-person.

  • The Process: You will need to provide your:

    • Known Traveler Number (KTN)

    • Date of Birth

    • Legal Last Name

  • You may also need to confirm your contact information and upload a picture of your driver’s license or passport. Many applicants receive approval in just a few days, though some can take up to 60 days.

Option 2: Renew In-Person

If you prefer, you can schedule an appointment at an enrollment center.

  • The Process: You’ll need to visit an enrollment center (often located at airports) to complete your renewal.

  • Consideration: This method usually doesn’t offer the online discounts and requires you to schedule and attend an appointment.

Important Reminder: TSA PreCheck doesn’t exempt you from baggage rules. Always double-check for prohibited items, like certain lithium-ion batteries, to avoid delays.

TSA PreCheck vs. Global Entry: Which is Right for You?

Both are Trusted Traveler Programs, but they serve different purposes:

  • TSA PreCheck ($70-$85 for 5 years): Focused solely on domestic U.S. travel. It speeds up your security screening before your flight.

  • Global Entry ($100 for 5 years): Managed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, this program is for international travelers. It provides expedited clearance when returning to the U.S. from abroad.

The Key Benefit: Global Entry includes TSA PreCheck at no additional cost. If you travel internationally even once or twice a year, Global Entry often provides the best value, covering both your domestic and international needs.

Summary: Keep Your Travel Smooth

  1. Check Your Status: Use the TSA’s online KTN lookup tool to find your expiration date.

  2. Renew Early: Begin the process up to six months in advance to avoid any lapse in benefits.

  3. Choose Online: Save time and money by renewing online through a TSA partner.

  4. Consider Global Entry: If you fly internationally, Global Entry may be a more valuable investment.

Don’t get stuck in the long security line—stay proactive and ensure your TSA PreCheck benefits are always active.
