How to Change the App View on Your Apple Watch
Your Apple Watch offers two distinct ways to view your installed apps: the iconic Grid View and the straightforward List View. Switching between them allows you to customize your watch’s home screen to match your preference for visual recognition or quick alphabetical searching. This guide covers how to change the setting directly on your watch or from your paired iPhone.
Understanding the Two App Views
Before changing the setting, it helps to know the difference between the two layouts:
-
Grid View: This is the default layout for many Apple Watches. App icons are arranged in a scalable honeycomb pattern that you can navigate by tapping or swiping on the screen. It allows for manual rearranging of icons.
-
List View: Apps are displayed in a simple, alphabetical list. You scroll through them vertically using the Digital Crown or your finger. This view is often faster for finding apps by name but does not allow icon rearrangement.
Method 1: Change the View Directly on Your Apple Watch
Follow these steps to switch layouts using your watch:
-
Press the Digital Crown to go to the Home Screen (the app launcher).
-
Open the Settings app (the gear icon).
-
Scroll down and tap App View.
-
Select either Grid View or List View. The change takes effect immediately.
-
Press the Digital Crown to exit settings.
Method 2: Change the View Using Your iPhone
You can also manage this setting from the Watch app on your iPhone:
-
Open the Watch app on your paired iPhone.
-
Ensure you are in the My Watch tab.
-
Tap on App View.
-
Choose your preferred layout: Grid View or List View. The new setting will sync to your watch.
Tips for Managing Your Layout
-
Rearranging Apps in Grid View: Press and hold any app icon on the watch’s home screen until the icons begin to jiggle. Drag an icon to a new position. Press the Digital Crown to save your arrangement.
-
Finding Apps: If you have many apps installed, List View can make finding a specific one easier by name. If you prefer visual identification, Grid View may be more intuitive.
-
Connectivity: If changes made on your iPhone don’t appear on your watch, ensure the devices are connected via Bluetooth and in close range.
-
System-Wide Setting: The app view you choose applies to your entire Apple Watch system and is not specific to individual watch faces.
